Housty's Homecoming

‘Valance, are you asleep? Valance… wake up!’

‘Wh-what? Housty, is that you? What time is it?’

‘Oh you’re gonna be so proud of me. I did it, I robbed the bank!’

‘You did what?’

‘I said I robbed the bank! Oh, I wish you’d seen me. Didn’t take but a minute, I just pointed my gun at the teller and he handed me a whole sack of money. And I did it all by myself, easy as pie. Are you proud of me?

‘I thought you were visiting your folks?’

‘I did, for a couple of days, till I tired of my father’s preaching. He said he’d give me anything I ever wanted, but he won’t part with a penny till I’m through with you.’

‘So you thought you’d rob the bank… in town… last Wednesday?’

‘Yes! We can’t live on love alone. You heard about it, huh?’

‘Were’ve you been since then?’

‘I’ve been staying with Cecile. I couldn’t risk coming straight here so I thought I’d lie low for the rest of the week and sneak back tonight. Well, are you proud of me?’

‘Listen, I’m tired, let’s get some sleep. We’ll talk about it in the morning.’

‘I only did it to make you proud of me.’

‘Okay, I’m proud of you.’

‘Well you might sound like you mean it! I couldn’t wait to tell you; I thought you’d throw your arms around me and be so darned proud. I thought if I proved myself to you then we could rob a bank together next time.’

‘No!’

‘Why not? Give me one good reason.’

‘You want a reason? Go look on the mantelpiece. Now let me get some sleep.’
